Decommissioned laptops are dismantled: the lithium-ion battery is removed separately, the aluminium or magnesium housing goes to metal recycling and the circuit board to precious metal recovery. Processed by certified processors; you receive an overview per assignment of what went where.

A laptop holds more raw material than you think
A laptop housing of aluminium or magnesium, a circuit board with gold and rare earth metals, and a lithium-ion battery that must be collected separately. On many laptops the SSD is a loose component and is erased first; on some models the storage is soldered to the motherboard and is then either erased in software or the board is destroyed. Every device is first registered and stripped of its storage media, after which we dismantle it and separate it by material.

What happens to each part
Per assignment we report the weight per stream and its destination. On the left the streams from the laptop itself, on the right the battery, the storage medium and the residual streams. The percentages are example values, RQNX confirms the actual split.

What happens to the battery?
It is removed separately and processed chemically, kept apart from the other material streams.
What if the storage is soldered to the motherboard?
We then erase the storage in software, or destroy the board if erasure is not possible. This too is recorded per serial number.
What figures do I get for my CSRD reporting?
Per assignment: weight per material stream, destination and processor, share reused and the number of devices by serial number.
