When decommissioning a data centre, we first record every device by serial number, then dismantle rack by rack. Every drive in servers, storage and network equipment is erased or destroyed according to NIST SP 800-88; usable hardware goes on to remarketing, the rest to certified recycling.

Planning per rack, not all at once
A data centre does not need to be cleared in a single weekend. We plan the decommissioning in phases per rack or room, so critical systems stay online longer. Every device is recorded by serial number when de-racked, before it goes on to erasure, destruction or remarketing.

Questions about data centre decommissioning
Does the data centre need to be cleared all at once?
No. We usually plan the decommissioning in phases per rack or room, so critical systems stay online as long as possible.
How do you register so much equipment?
Every device is recorded by serial number, model and type when de-racked, before it goes on to erasure, destruction or remarketing.
What happens to usable servers and storage?
They are valued and bought back through remarketing, after erasure of all drives with a certificate. The residual value is paid out or offset.
Can you also process network equipment?
Yes. Network equipment with internal storage is erased or destroyed in the same way; the rest goes to certified recycling.
